Korfstock 2014 – what a blinder!

Korfstock 2014 review!

So, it was that time of year again, endless planning, panics about the weather and desperate marketing to get as many teams involved as possible!

Well for one thing, our sun dances during the week before certainly worked, we kept an eye on the weather forecast all week which gradually said it was going to rain, thunder and be cloudy. So when we arrived on site at silly o’clock in the morning and it was already over 20 degrees – it was a nice surprise!

We had 27 teams to prepare for, a really great number and each one of them turned up – although there was some borrowing here and there. A huge number of Lakers took advantage of the ‘free entry if you help out’ offer by turning up mega early to set out the pitches, front desk and generally get everything ready – thank you to everyone who helped, it was brilliant to get the job done so quickly and I’m super proud of you all!

As teams started to arrive, the heat also started to rise and suncream was lashed on in huge quantities. we started pretty much on time with the first games on our 7 pitches.

Lakers entered 4 teams into the tournament – Kalua, Hula, Poi and WikiWiki. Captained brilliantly by Ronald, Charlene, Tracey and Jim respectively – thank you guys for taking the mantle! There were only a few borrows throughout the day as I believe we were only 2 boys down in the afternoon.

All games seem to be played with great spirits, with no visible over-competitiveness or sad scenes! The burger van was busy throughout the day and the cake stand was certainly popular.

A friend of a Lakers player managed over a minute on the surf simulator and I do think that many teams went away preferring korfball frisbee to normal korf!

All four Lakers teams won their first games of the morning, with only Lakers Kalua taking a full sweep of 4 wins from the morning putting them in the top pool for the afternoon. (Unfortunately, that pitted them against the best teams in the tournament and they lost to all (just) in the afternoon finishing a brilliant 8th.)

Lakers Hula finished a sterling 18th, with Poi finishing 26th and WikiWiki 27th. Still great results considering the number of newbies in both those teams.

The final was fought on the main court between “The Hoods” (Containing some England players) and “Manchester Warriors”. Reffed by Toby with the Supernova team playing a fun game of ‘Hand signal drinking’ on the sidelines, the games was fast paced (especially impressive with the heat and the exertions during the day) and of a high quality, with ‘The Hoods’ running out eventual tournament winners.

Although many teams had fled to get home for a rest, lots of teams stayed to watch ‘The Hood’s receive their 1st place awards of ‘Concrete Cow moneyboxes dressed in Hawaiian gear’!

Then it was on to the social – being so warm, many teams didn’t come into the celebrations until later, but the Fish & Chip van went down well (I was starving!) and the free punch meant that most people didn’t need to buy much more alcohol! Plus Lakers had done such a great job on the Bake off that there were plenty of cakes left over for people to munch on!

So many people made an effort with the fancy dress, wearing coconut bras, Lei’s and grass skirts. The band started playing at around 9pm and the dance floor was filled immediately. An epic game of Limbo took place with Laker Michael managed to stoop the lowest to impress everyone! The band finished their set around 11pm and most of us oldies trudged off to bed, leaving only the hardcore and the students to keep partying long into the night.

It was a brilliant experience for all of us and I hope everyone had a great time!

You can see photos of the day and evening on our Facebook page, please add your own too!

Hope to see you next year!
