Lakers come 9th at Cambridge

After great success at our home tournament Korfstock and a days training with England Coach Dave Buckland – Lakers hit the road to Cambridge for the next instalment in the summer tournament calendar.

This report comes from on-the-day male top scorer, Ronald!

Lakers headed to the tournament hoping to put into practice what Dave Buckland taught them from Saturday’s training session. Captained superbly by Megan, the team consisted of Ronald, Joe, Derek, Dan, Kelly and Gemma with a guest appearance from Emma and England U21s Chelsie.

The morning started off with pool games against KV2, Cambridge Tigers and Norwich Knights, which on paper looked to be a tough group. However, Lakers started off brilliantly by winning their first two games against KV2 and Tigers – with Chelsie, Ronald, Dan and Derek all finding the basket. Norwich Knights fielded a strong team and proved too strong, beating us 4-1 meaning we finished 2nd in our pool.

Lunchtime arrived and we were greeted with scenes of me eating a half-cooked burger and Joe getting stung on his finger by a wasp as he was reaching for a jelly bean! As a result of finishing 2nd, we were pitted against 1st place in another pool, (Selly Oak Lumberjacks) For a place in the afternoon top pool, much was at stake. The match was very close throughout but Lakers lost the game 3-1 placing us in the 7th-12th pool. With the techniques learnt from Dave being implemented, everyone played extremely well in the afternoon to win 3 out of the 5 games and finish an amazing 9th! Well done to our top scorer Chelsie with 7 goals and I claimed 2nd with 5 goals.

Well played everyone and we were once again very fortunate with the weather as thunder, lightning and rain came down on our way home!
