In our first season as MK Lakers – we’ve only gone and won some silverware!
Lakers took 17 players to the SMKA cup this weekend, with a mix of young, old(er!) new and experienced players as part of the team.
Under the impression that Harrow were also entering two ‘equal’ teams we split the 17 players in half trying to match the teams equally. I simply looked at trying to pair a long shooter with a solid support player in both ends.
So the teams ended up as:
Lakers 1 – Jeni & Gemma, Megan & Victoria, Derek & Mark, Joe & Colin (With Matt as Sub)
Lakers 2 – Charlene & Emma Lawson, Emma Cash & Mandy, Ronald & Alan, Jimmy & Jake (with Matt as sub)
(the 1 & 2 were simply to distinguish the teams!)
We were entered into different pools of the competition, with Lakers 1 pitted against Supernova, Harrow 2 and Oxford City and Lakers 2 against Harrow 1, Abingdon and St. Dominics.
Lakers 1 started off the tournament against Supernova – a completely makeshift team with just 3 supernova players and against Lakers 1 – mainly Harrow 1 players! Unfortunately, aside from a good long shot from me (Jeni) we just didn’t gel well and went down 5-1.
Lakers 2 then took to the stage against St Dominic’s, a new team to korfball made up of college aged students mainly from a basketball background and some of the Harrow 2 team. It was actually a closely fought game and incredibly frantic! Luckily Lakers 2 showed some dominance near the end and ground out a 2-1 win.
Lakers 1 were up again, this time against Oxford City. A slightly more experienced team gave the game a different dimension. We took the lead early and then some pretty awful refereeing decisions allowed two goals from a defended position stand from Oxford City unfortunately sending Lakers 2 to their second defeat 3-4.
Abingdon were next on the list for Lakers 2 in a high scoring game which ended in a draw of 5-5. A neat hat-trick from Emma Lawson keeping Lakers in the game.
Harrow 2 were the final pool game for Lakers 1 which made for an easier game, with Jeni and Victoria amongst the scorers to win 6-2. Unfortunately, the single win left us in third position and playing against Abingdon in the 5/6th place play off.
The Abingdon game also featured a number of recognisable Harrow faces for this game and some untidy defending in the last minutes let us down, leaving the final score 3-3! Meaning a penalty shoot out was in order. Pretty much everyone backed away from the basket! Jeni sunk the first penalty and Abingdon miss theirs but several more misses by both teams left Abingdon to sink one more to win the game – up stepped their most experienced player who duly netted and beat Lakers 1 to 5th Position.
For Lakers 1, their final pool game came against Harrow 1, who had two wins to their name. Fielding a strong team, it was another hard fought game, but with Lakers 1 on the side to cheer the team on, Lakers 2 played an absolute blinder with Charlene sinking a gorgeous goal to take the lead and Emma Lawson netting the winner to take the game 5-3. A well deserved victory landing Lakers 2 into the semi final against Supernova.
In the Semi final, Supernova took on a very different outlook to when Lakers 1 played them as the Harrow 1 players were now playing in their own semi-final against Oxford City! So Lakers 2 had an easier game against many of the Harrow 2 players! They were easily dispatched 3-0 – so it was onto the final and as Harrow 1 had beaten Oxford 4-2 – it was a replay of their final pool game!
The final was fiercely contested, both teams desperate to take the win, cup and glory! Lakers 2 really pulled together and with some great defending and beautiful shots took the win 4-2.
A momentous moment for MK Lakers and I even got to present the cup to the winning captain – Ronald!
Well done everyone who participated, a great day and a great result! Thank you to our drivers, Jeni, Mark, Manyd, Jimmy, Charlene and Mandy. Thanks to captains Jeni and Ronald and to refs; Jeni, Mark and Emma Cash and lastly, thank you to injured Chelsie who came to help manage the teams.
