Match report – Lakers 1 v Cambridge Phoenix – SERL – 14 Feb 2016

Lakers 1 played at home to Cambridge Phoenix on the 14th of February, what could me more romantic than spending Valentine’s day on the korfball pitch?

The normal starting line up was missing Dan F, so Derek started in his place and Dave was on the sideline ready and waiting to come on when required. There was another change with the normal ends being mixed up to try some new combinations.

Phoenix were ready to play, the whistle went, and after some passing and shots from Chelsie’s end it didn’t take long for Gregg to score the first goal of the game, with a quick shot from under the post.

Both ends seemed to struggle to get into an attacking rhythm in the first half. Defensively, Lakers were solid and the game between both ends could easily be described as scrappy and physical. Despite this, Lakers still had the upper hand during the first half, with better shooting accuracy and a stronger defence than Phoenix.

Towards the end of the first half Dave came on replacing Derek, mindful of Derek’s healing ankle injury. Dave injected some movement to the end he joined, helping to get Lakers back on track. The half time score was a very low 6-2 to Lakers.

In the second half, Lakers were determined to play their own game and not play the scrappy game that they were being drawn into. This determination paid off: there was much better movement, improved shots being taken and an increase in the amount of goals being scored.

Phoenix battled hard and made some substitutions. Their tactic of cutting out the feed in defence didn’t quite work as Lakers, with their tall boys, worked the cross- court and overhead balls to their advantage. Lakers had a solid defence throughout and stood their ground with the physical game.

Final score 16-7 to Lakers.
