The first Lakers 2 v Lakers 1 derby match report came from a Lakers 2 perspective. This time it’s Lakers 1 turn.
Lakers 1 hoped to continue their impressive record of an 8 match unbeaten streak and close the gap with league leaders Bearsted by winning the local derby clash against Lakers 2. Lakers 2 fielded a much changed side due to unavailability: there were recalls for Pete and Kate, and two SERL debuts for Dom and Cameron. The big question on everyone’s lips was: would Ron be able to achieve the landmark of 100 career goals (which Lianne accomplished last week)?
Lakers 1 started the game impressively, with quick goals in succession from Chelsie and David in the first 2 attacks. Some strong defensive work from Lakers 2 prevented Lakers 1 from scoring quickly again and they managed to run down the shot clock a couple of times.
However, with Lakers 1 front defending and not giving space to the opposition, it was inevitable that the next 2 goals went to Lakers 1 courtesy of Lianne and Ron. More goals followed for Lakers 1 with players now finding their range. Goals coming from Dan F, Dan W, Chelsie, Ron and Emma to give Lakers 1 an unassailable lead.
Some might dispute this (given his far from elegant shooting technique) but 100 career goals was never in doubt for Ron as he scored his 3rd goal of the game and cement his name in the korfball history books!
Half time score was 12-0 to Lakers 1.
The second half continued in a similar fashion, with a run in shot by Chelsie kicking things off. There were limited chances for Lakers 2 but some sloppy play out of defence from Lakers 1 gifted them an opportunity, which Nicki excellently converted to get Lakers 2 on the score sheet.
The lapse of concentration spurred Lakers 1 on to get the next 4 goals, including Mandy’s drop off meaning all eight Lakers 1 players were now on the score sheet. Lakers 2 grew into the game and created more opportunities in attack as Derek scored the next 2 goals from a medium and long shot.
Again, Lakers 1 responded straight away with a penalty and some great long shots. Lakers 2 replied with one of their own from Joe D, but Lakers 1 proved too strong in the end and sealed the game with a final score 29-4.
