This Sunday saw MK Lakers 1 make the long trek to Norfolk to take on Norwich City 1 in their penultimate SERL match.
This was an important game for both teams; Lakers 1 had given impressive performances in the past few games and were determined to keep up their winning streak, and a victory for Norwich City 1 could take them to the top of the table! But with two key players down, a full sized pitch to battle on, and a very experienced, well-drilled and TALL opposition, Lakers 1 knew they had their work cut out.
The game started slowly with both teams defending hard but struggling to sink their shots in attack. It was Norwich who found the korf first, followed closely by Dan Wood. Lianne quickly followed Norwich’s second goal with her own and for the majority of the first half it looked as though it would be a closely contested game.
However it wasn’t long before Norwich’s shots really started dropping and with Lakers struggling to create shooting opportunities past Norwich’s tight front defence the score at half time was 8-2 to Norwich.
In the second half Lakers focused on keeping the ball moving and setting up strong attacks. By working hard to get a good feed position and strong collect they started recycling the ball much better and keeping the ball longer in attack. Smarter play by Lakers meant that Norwich became a bit more physical as both teams fought even harder at the post. Lianne and Dan W did a great job at converting any penalties given in Lakers’ favour and a super movement from behind the post by Gregg meant another goal on the sheet for Lakers.
Despite their hard work, Lakers were unable to keep up with their opposition and Norwich took the match 18-6. A disappointing result overall for Lakers but well done for keeping heads high and fighting for everything right up until the final whistle.
Plenty to be learnt from Norwich City 1’s style of play that can be taken away and worked on for next season! Many thanks to Derek, Emma Cash and Kelly Crabtree from Lakers 2 for playing today – you were brilliant.
